Cultural Heritage Attractions and Tourism Development

Event Background: There are countless historical attractions in China, but many are not well protected and rarely known by people. As a result, the folk culture may be challenging to preserve and pass on. This online course aims to raise awareness of heritage sites protection for rural areas and provide strategies and ideas to help those who want to boost the local economy and spread the folk culture through cultural tourism.

Eric Aubert is a museum and exhibition specialist who has experience in heritage programs development and cultural events programs in Uzbekistan (Unesco ; French Embassy) and rural remote areas in France.
His philosophy of cultural development is based on art history and the knowledge of local identities to share the most interesting part of a place with visitors and audiences.
Course brief
The Crest is a medieval town in southern France surrounded by a huge tower - the unique rest of the medieval castle and the highest dungeon in France. The town has many cultural heritage assets that attract tourists but could be more attractive when considering the quality of its cultural heritage (buildings, history, craftsmanship). The case study is an overview of past, ongoing and future tourism development projects based on cultural heritage in Crest.
1. Accessibility and circulation: the tower is located on a hill that is not easy to access.
2. The storytelling of the local identity: what is a creative way to tell a story.
3. Lack of historical and archaeological research.
4. Business issues: hotels, hospitality, social background and evolution,
5. Conservation and restoration of cultural heritage: the difficulties in restoring the building in a historical area.


Christian specializes in the development and implementation of sustainable tourism and sustainable regional development and has led tourism development projects in Europe, Central- Southeast and East-Asia. In addition, he has wide experience in the field of labeling and monitoring. He is a member of the advisory board of the Austrian and European eco-labels for lodging establishments, a member of the advisory board of Ibex FairStay in Switzerland, a member of the certification committee of TourCert (www.tourcert.org) and has published books on the evaluation of sustainability in tourism.
Christian Baumgartner was a member of the (former) Tourism Sustainability Group of the EU Commission in DG Enterprise and of the Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) of the UNEP 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Program and a member of several national and international advisory bodies for tourism. He is and was teaching at universities in Europe and Asia, amongst them in partner programs with the Shanghai University of Engineering Science and the Qingdao University of Science and Technology.

Sustainable Cultural Tourism can make use of cultural heritage and contribute to its long-lasting preservation.
The contribution shows model cases from different countries and discusses the challenges and solutions on the way to develop a sustainable tourism. It will have a focus on the tasks for different stakeholders, such as public authorities, private industry and civil society as well.


During her year as the UNESCO Chair, Dr Maria researched how to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage sites. Her teaching and research activities focus on SME management (internationalization, human resource management, sustainability, Industry 4.0) and sustainable tourism (use of ICT to protect and promote World Heritage-related heritage) locations; cultural dissemination through ICT heritage; digital promotion strategies to promote tourism destinations; localization of tourism social media content).


Dr. John Ebejer is the author of the book ‘Tourism in European Cities: The visitor experience of architecture, urban spaces and city attractions’.
He also authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, mostly about urban tourism and historic areas. He lectures at the University of Malta and has delivered lectures at universities in England, Finland, Austria, Italy and Spain.
Dr. Ebejer holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Sheffield and a Doctorate in tourism studies from the University of Westminster.

Aylin is an architect by training and specialises in building conservation and heritage management. Alongside her academic position, she has over 20 years consultancy experience globally advising on the conservation, development and management of heritages, including World Heritage Sites.
Course Brief
The purpose of this lecture is to expand in more detail on the ways in which cultural heritage sites in remote locations can be used as drivers for local economic and socio-economic development. The lecture will cover aspects of cultural heritage value, tourism development alongside other ways in which heritage sites can engender economic and social development by improving local opportunities. The ways in which benefits can be achieved and typical challenges will be discussed and explored through two case studies


Karmen is mainly active in the fields of sustainable tourism development, international project management and strategy and project development for tourist regions and municipalities.Since its foundation in 2006, Karmen has been director of the association "Alpine Pearls". Alpine Pearls is the network of 19 alpine communities that offer green travel and comfortable ways to enjoy holidays in an environmentally conscious fashion. Karmen organised here, e.g. the know-how transfer, conferences, EU-projects, joint marketing activities, mutual media relations, production of joint advertising media, co-operation with partners, events and public relations, etc.
